Bishop Hector Ortiz shares his appreciation of UMCOR and its continued support for the people of Puerto Rico after the island was hit by two devastating hurricanes in 2017.

With more than 950 earthquakes and aftershocks recorded and more than 800 homes damaged since December 2019, the Methodist Church of Puerto Rico (MPCR) and its social holiness agency, Rebuilding Communities With Hope (REHACE), have made it a priority to bring a message of hope to people throughout the island in 2020.

Working as migration ministry advocates on Mexico’s northern border with the U.S., Yabes Manokaran and Eric Agron hear the stories – family stories, political stories, religious stories – dangerous and beautiful stories of the lives of people in transit, trying to find safety.

Through small grants, the Encounter with Christ fund has nurtured Methodist mission and relationships in 26 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Nearing the end of a three-year pilot plan, both agencies will make adjustments in their operations while remaining committed to continuing their presence in the region.

Methodists who live in Honduras revive the Wesleyan class meeting tradition to help members discern how to be the church in mission, even in the most challenging of contexts.

Grants totaling $853,301 will help build the capacities of United Methodist mission partner organizations around the world next year in the areas of Leadership Development, Congregational Development, Ministry with the Poor and Global Health.

Residents of Grand Bahama Island and Abaco are receiving relief in the form of shelter, meals and hygiene items. Some are also taking great joy in being a part of the volunteer effort, serving their neighbors in the midst of their own tragedies.

The month of September marks two years since Hurricane Maria brought widespread destruction to Puerto Rico. The recovery has progressed steadily, thanks largely to the Methodist Church of Puerto Rico, and with the help of UMCOR training and funding and more than 200 Volunteer in Mission teams.

As Hurricane Dorian continued to threaten the U.S. east coast, United Methodists were connecting with Methodists in the Bahamas to start relief efforts.
