“Through the hands and feet of dedicated volunteers and the support of the United Methodist connection, we will walk with the people affected by Helene on the path toward healing and restoration…”

Following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in the southeast United States, UMCOR coordinated relief efforts through its partnership with annual conferences to provide technical assistance and essential supplies. Immediate needs like food and water, shelter materials and cleanup efforts through UMCOR-trained Early Response Teams reached the hardest-hit communities. The United Methodist connection embodied a compassionate presence in the wake of this far-reaching disaster, coming together all across the region to support resilience and recovery for families and communities.

“There’s a spiritual component…UMCOR’s recovery programs aren’t just about repairing a home, but trying to make the household whole again. Whether they know it or not, by coming alongside of a survivor and addressing their needs, the case manager is providing healing.”

A Vermont community still navigating the aftermath of devastating floods in 2023 found hope when the New England Annual Conference received a long-term recovery grant from UMCOR this year. The support provides home repairs and case management for survivors, securing much-needed resources for those with fewer resources or those whom no one else is assisting. And it embodies one of UMCOR’s guiding principles: “early in and last out.”
