Project Information

Creating opportunities for better lives through Christ-centered service.

Describe the need affecting community

We work in a part of Appalachia that continues to be challenged with issues related to poverty and lack of opportunity. There are serious challenges for children, youth, women seniors and families to be able to live, much less thrive, in our area. There are issues around education, community development, economic development and health, among others. These are issues that affect communities all over Appalachia. Henderson Settlement has been working to engage and alleviate these challenges since our founding in 1925.

How will this Advance project help to address the need?

We are continuing to offer help with the above-mentioned basic needs, but are also offering more classes and life skill development and helping our community members to become more engaged and self-sufficient. Our volunteers help with many basic needs but we are also seeking to help our youth, children and families achieve higher levels of success in every area of life. We want to help our community to not just survive, but to thrive. We are also seeking to make sure that our services help people in a manner that respects their dignity and creativity. At all levels of our programming and ministry, we are seeking to be in ministry and mission “with” the other person.

Describe the primary goal of the project

Our goals have remained relatively consistent, and align with our mission and vision statement of “Sharing the love of Christ in Appalachia” through “Creating opportunities for better lives through Christ-centered service.” 1. To share the good news of Jesus Christ with our communities. 2. To build a house for a family each year and work on our home repair projects in Kentucky and Tennessee. 3. To continue to provide spiritual, economic, education and social opportunities to our neighbors in the community. 4. Continue to develop and provide classes in a variety of subjects (around life skills) to those in the community.

Describe the change you would like to see in the community as a result of this Advance project

We are hoping that we will continue to see more self-confidence as skills are learned and improved. We hope to see personal financial situations improve. We hope to see our youth do better in school at all grade levels. And we hope to see (and help encourage) more creative and economic activity in our community. We work with wonderful people, and we want to help them to thrive as a community and as individuals and families.
