Project Information

Establishing a historical archive on Mexican Methodism in memory of Rev. Edgar Avitia Legarda.

Describe the need affecting community

Methodism in Mexico has a long history and this project will ensure that historical documents related to the church are compiled, conserved, publicized and made available to lay persons and scholars. Housed at Colegio Palmore, in Chihuahua, Mexico, the collection will ensure the history of the Methodist Church of Mexico is preserved for future generations.

How will this Advance project help to address the need?

The establishment of this collection in memory of Rev. Edgar Avitia Legarda will allow current and future documents to be organized, preserved and publicized. The collection will be administered and maintained by the Archives and History Commission of the Central North Annual Conference (CANCEN) of the Methodist Church of Mexico, and it will be made available to those interested in investigating and disseminating the rich history of the church and its annual conferences.

Describe the primary goal of the project

The goal of this project is to bring together archival and historic documents and information related to the Methodist Church of Mexico in a central location. The collection will honor the life and legacy of Rev. Edgar Avitia Legarda (1960-2023), a native of Mexico, who served a number of pastoral and administrative roles in The United Methodist Church, including as director of Global Relationships with the General Board of Global Ministries.

Describe the change you would like to see in the community as a result of this Advance project

The establishment of this collection will allow current and additional artifacts to be organized, preserved and made available such that the rich heritage of the Methodist Church of Mexico can be celebrated and promoted for the strengthening of the larger church.
