Project Information

Reducing hunger and malnutrition in the Caribbean and the Central American region.

Describe the need affecting community

Chronic hunger and malnutrition plaque communities throughout Central America and the Caribbean. In Haiti, poor nutrition and chronic illness leads to one in three children being stunted physically and mentally. Struggling families, most who are small-scale farmers throughout Central America and the Caribbean work hard to contribute to their families and communities’ food supply. Despite their perseverance, marginal lands, challenging conditions, natural disasters and political strife cause over half of the population to remain among the most vulnerable to chronic hunger and poverty.

How will this Advance project help to address the need?

For families and farmers with few resources, training and information about simple, low-cost techniques for improving crop production can make a dramatic impact on their ability to provide for their families. ECHO’s work brings hands-on workshops in farming, community and kitchen gardening, translation of agricultural resources into Spanish, French and Haitian Creole, distribution of seeds for drought-resistant and diversified crops and knowledge and resources for seed-banking systems for seed saving and sharing.

Describe the primary goal of the project

Over three years to train 3500 missionaries and community development workers serving in the Caribbean and Central America. As this knowledge is shared, an estimated 121,280 families and small-scale farmers will be equipped to provide for their children and the door will be opened for the Gospel of Christ to be shared.

Describe the change you would like to see in the community as a result of this Advance project

The reduction of hunger and malnutrition, especially in children, throughout the Central American and Caribbean region. Families gaining the ability to provide food for their children and for men and women to have restored dignity and health. Most importantly, for the Gospel to be heard by more people and for His name to be glorified.
