Providing basic human needs such as food and clothing, and providing life skills education
Describe the need affecting community
The region continues to struggle with poverty. Over 25% of children are living below the poverty level and over 50% being below the self-sufficiency index. Education continues to be a great need with 78% of the 4th/5th graders in our local elementary school unable to pass a 4th grade reading exam. Employment continues to be limited to service jobs often part time and at minimum wage inhibiting individuals being able to move beyond poverty. Heroin use is increasing as well as human trafficking.
How will this Advance project help to address the need?
We will continue with the programs listed above as well as adding NOVA, our Thursday evening dinner and worship experience. We will begin a youth mentoring program, and also we are working on an adult mentoring program to assist those who want to begin the journey out of poverty.
