Assisting bright African students with insufficient financial means to attend Africa University.

Describe the need affecting community

There are many young people in Africa who have the potential to succeed at university level, but do not have the financial means. Some come from households that have struggled financially for generations. Others are from families that once coped well, but changed circumstances now make it impossible to afford a university education. Examples are sickness or death of the primary breadwinner or macroeconomic problems that result in job losses. Some families have taken on extra child relatives due to deaths of the parents from AIDS or other causes. The extra responsibilities make it even more difficult to care for their own children.

How will this Advance project help to address the need?

The AU Scholarship fund helps to provide financial assistance to those students in financial need. In addition, potential students who have financial need are identified and assured of assistance if they maintain good grades and behavior. This assurance provides them with the security they need so that they can concentrate on their studies instead of devoting much time and energy to resolving financial problems.

Describe the primary goal of the project

The primary goal is to invest in Africa’s future by helping young people receive a quality education at Africa University.

Describe the change you would like to see in the community as a result of this Advance project

We would like to see more students from low-income families graduating from Africa University, and become leaders in their communities.
