Project Information

Transforming communities by increasing local capacity to meet basic needs, increase resilience, and improve the quality of locals’ lives.

Describe the need affecting community

We’re working with communities in the Central Highlands that still don’t have access to clean water or sanitary toilets. Places where babies regularly die from diarrhea, tetanus and pneumonia, and where it’s not uncommon for mothers lose their lives in childbirth. In these villages, access to healthcare and education is extremely limited, malnutrition is rife, and many adults have never had the opportunity to learn to read or write.

How will this Advance project help to address the need?

Through large and small-scale agricultural demonstrations and interventions, skills training in a variety of areas, education on water, sanitations and hygiene (WASH), maternal health, financial literacy, peacebuilding and community leadership training, and help with infrastructure such as latrines and clean water solutions, our team works alongside villagers to find solutions that work for their community. Additionally, at present there are limited options for them to get out in the event of a medical emergency or a sudden drop in security. By helping to fund an airstrip, you can make our work in this region more secure and long-lasting, enabling our expat volunteer professionals to continue working alongside our Afghan staff to deliver high-quality development and health projects in these villages.

Describe the primary goal of the project

Our Community Development Project seeks to improve the quality of life for people in the Central Highlands. We empower communities to gain access to safe drinking water and clean latrines, to learn how to keep new mothers and babies healthy, to grow vegetables and improve nutrition, and to gain skills in literacy, business and finance. Through your support, the effects of poverty, conflict, and vulnerability can be reduced by building families’ and communities’ capacity to meet their basic needs, increase resilience and improve the quality of their lives.
