Syabbamba, Simon Asah

Simon Asah Syabbamba is an international Global Mission Fellow with the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, engaged in a two-year term of service.
The Global Mission Fellows program takes young adults ages 20-30 out of their home environments and places them in new contexts for mission experience and service. The program has a strong emphasis on faith and justice. Global Mission Fellows become active parts of their new local communities. They connect the church in mission across cultural and geographical boundaries. They grow in personal and social holiness and become strong young leaders working to build just communities in a peaceful world.
Simon is a lifelong member of Central Pilgrim Wesleyan Church in Choma, Zambia. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and communication.
He described his spiritual growth as a journey of faith, learning and transformation. “Over the years,” Simon said, “I have experienced moments of deep reflection, challenges that tested my faith and opportunities that strengthened my relationship with God. Through prayer, Scripture and fellowship with others, I have developed a greater understanding of God’s purpose for my life and how I can serve others in a way that reflects God’s love.”
One of the most significant aspects of his spiritual growth has been learning to trust in God’s plan, even when the path is uncertain. “I have come to realize that true faith is not just about personal devotion but also about action – living out the values of love, compassion and service in everyday life,” Simon said. “Through this realization, I have felt an increasing call to mission work, where I can actively share God’s message and be a source of encouragement and support to those in need.”
For Simon, mission work is an opportunity to be part of something greater than oneself. It allows connection with people from different backgrounds, builds relationships based on faith and trust, and encourages service in ways that make a meaningful impact. Whether through education, community development or spiritual guidance, he sees mission work as a way to live out his faith with purpose.
Simon believes that serving others is one of the highest expressions of faith. “By dedicating my time and energy to mission work,” he said, “I hope to bring hope, inspiration and God’s love to those who need it most.
“Serving as a Global Mission Fellow,” he continued, “represents an opportunity to combine my passion for storytelling, my dedication to community empowerment and my faith-driven desire to serve others. As a journalism and communication student, I have learned the power of narratives in driving change, amplifying voices and fostering understanding across diverse communities. I believe that through this program, I can use my skills to share impactful stories, highlight social justice issues and inspire meaningful action.”
Growing up in a family that runs a school, Simon witnessed firsthand how education transforms lives. His mother’s commitment to creating a nurturing space for young learners instilled in him a deep appreciation for service, leadership and perseverance. “I have been actively involved in supporting her efforts, from helping with school activities to interacting with students and parents,” he explained. “This experience has taught me the importance of patience, empathy and collaboration in building a strong community.”
Simon’s motivation to become a Global Mission Fellow stems from his desire to contribute to meaningful change while growing personally, professionally and spiritually. “I am excited about the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone, immerse myself in a new cultural context, and work alongside people who are equally committed to justice and faith-driven service,” he said.
“I believe this program will equip me with valuable life skills, including cross-cultural communication, adaptability and resilience,” Simon continued. “It will also provide a platform to integrate my journalism expertise with hands-on community work, allowing me to tell stories that matter while actively participating in transformative initiatives. Furthermore, serving as a fellow will deepen my spiritual growth and strengthen my commitment to serving others selflessly.”
Simon aspires to use his experiences as a Global Mission Fellow to advocate for social justice, empower underrepresented voices and contribute to sustainable community development. “This program,” he said, “aligns with my personal values and professional goals, and I am eager to embark on this journey of faith, service and growth.
“I am excited about the opportunity to engage with local stakeholders, share impactful stories and co-create initiatives that have lasting impact.”
He also recognizes Global Mission Fellows as a platform for personal and professional growth.
“Immersing myself in diverse cultural settings will not only deepen my understanding of global challenges,” Simon said, “but also strengthen my ability to innovate and lead effectively.”
