Project Information

Empowering communities through sustainable development initiatives.

Describe the need affecting community

Partner communities in Afghanistan face significant challenges related to access to clean water, sustainable livelihoods and food security. Limited hygiene practices contribute to preventable diseases, while unsafe water sources burden families, especially women, with the daily struggle of fetching water. Agricultural practices in these regions are often inefficient, leading to food insecurity and economic instability. Additionally, women, including those with disabilities, lack opportunities to generate income, contributing to household vulnerability. Maternal health remains a critical issue, with high mortality rates due to inadequate access to health care and a lack of knowledge about safe practices during pregnancy and childbirth. These challenges highlight the urgent need for comprehensive, community-led development programs to improve living standards, health and economic resilience.

How will this Advance project help to address the need?

This project addresses community needs through an integrated approach that empowers local individuals and families. By providing clean drinking water through pipeline construction and equipping communities with training in sanitation and hygiene, it improves health outcomes and reduces daily hardships. Agricultural training programs introduce sustainable techniques, such as greenhouse farming and seed improvements, to enhance food security and increase crop yields. Income generation activities, including self-help groups and skills training for women, promote economic independence and resilience. The project also encourages long-term maternal health improvements by equipping individuals with life-saving knowledge, while awaiting government permission to resume comprehensive activities in this area. These combined efforts ensure communities are equipped with tools and skills for sustainable growth, fostering hope and self-reliance.

Describe the primary goal of the project

The primary goal of this project is to create lasting, positive change in partner communities by addressing critical needs in water, agriculture, livelihoods and health. It aims to build sustainable systems that empower individuals to become agents of change in their own lives and communities. Whether through ensuring access to clean water, improving agricultural practices or providing income-generation opportunities, the project strives to reduce vulnerabilities and promote resilience. It seeks to strengthen community structures, enable collaboration and equip participants with the knowledge and resources to sustain progress long after the project ends.

Describe the change you would like to see in the community as a result of this Advance project

We envision a community where families no longer struggle for basic necessities, like clean water and food, and where women and men alike are empowered to contribute to their households and communities. We hope to see reduced incidences of waterborne diseases and improved health outcomes because of better hygiene practices and access to clean water. Agricultural innovations will enhance food security and resilience, allowing families to provide for themselves and their communities. Women, including those with disabilities, will experience a newfound sense of dignity and purpose through sustainable income generation. Ultimately, we aim for a community that is healthier, more economically stable and equipped to sustain its own development, fostering hope and self-reliance for future generations.
