Describe the need affecting community

Zambia, as a whole, is a nation in need of more education. We have many people who cannot read. We have people preaching false doctrine because they are not able to study, and learn for themselves. We need accurate teaching. Because of the lack of education and the widespread poverty, training pastors is extremely difficult. Furthermore, pastors in Zambia are largely unpaid. This means their children often lack education as their parents cannot pay school fees. In 2007, the Zambia Provisional Conference resolved that every church pay their pastor approximately $50/month. However, no single church managed to do so. Nine years later nothing more has been done regarding this issue.

How will this Advance project help to address the need?

The Pastor Education and Salary Support Advance Project will help pastors feed their families, pay rent and educate their children while pastoring churches in areas of extreme poverty. It will additionally address the need for solid United Methodist doctrine from our pulpits, where the alternative is often “name it and claim it” prosperity gospel heresy.

Describe the primary goal of the project

The primary goal of this project is to provide our United Methodist pastors, (and potential ones) with more than basic education (higher than grade 7), and help financially towards college/seminary. It is also the purpose of this fund to give pastors a subsistence salary, so that they will have a roof over their heads, food on the table and children who can attend school. The long term impact is that our pastors will be able to teach and encourage and truly care for the church members. In turn, we hope to also teach the church members how important it is to pay their pastor enough that they can do their job well (and the pastor won’t be lured away to another church/job).

Describe the change you would like to see in the community as a result of this Advance project

1. We would like to see the people be encouraged! a. The community will watch their pastor grow, change, and teach more confidently! b. The community will see the positive impacts of paying their pastor a salary. c. The people will be encouraged through proper teaching, and watching goals being set and accomplished. Too often poor people believe lies like “it’s impossible”; “it’ll never happen”; “I could never…, etc. but this will demonstrate otherwise.
