28 june 2026 Response in El Junquito, La Guaira and Caracas During the day, needs assessment and shelter identification activities were carried out in La Guaira State, covering three locations: the Diocese of La Guaira, the Campo de Golf shelter in Caraballeda, and the José María Vargas Sports Complex shelter. The area continues to show widespread devastation, with numerous buildings destroyed while search and rescue teams continue operations to locate possible survivors trapped under the rubble. The team then traveled to Caracas to assess the conditions of two additional potential shelter sites: the Coliseo and Parque del Oeste. The team also visited Plaza del Rectorado at the Central University of Venezuela, one of the largest humanitarian aid collection centers in Caracas, where they supported the distribution of relief kits. At the same time, an emergency response was carried out in El Junquito, where severe impacts remain evident, with damaged homes and a large number of affected people. At each of the locations visited, the team conducted interviews and needs assessments with community members to better understand their current situation and identify priority needs. Many people continue to live outdoors or shelter outside the buildings where they previously lived, as these structures have sustained significant damage and are no longer safe to occupy. It was also identified that many families do not have the means to cook their food. The team also visited Fundación El Buen Samaritano, a care home for older adults, where relief kits were distributed and needs assessments were conducted with residents. The director of the facility reported that one of the building's walls has sustained structural damage, raising concerns about the safety of the premises.
