ATLANTA — The 2023 Annual Report for Global Ministries and the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is now available. The report focuses on the main programmatic themes of 2023, taken from Hebrews 10:24, and describes many ways that the work of mission extends both love and service throughout the world. Continuing work on four main mission priorities – humanitarian relief and recovery; missionaries; evangelism and church revitalization; and global health – Global Ministries and UMCOR further defined the main tenets of their work to serve alongside communities in need of partners to improve their lives.

Through an opening letter from leadership, impact stories, quotes from beneficiaries and statistics on the projects, places and people served, readers get a quick view of the goals and accomplishments of 2023.

In order to encourage and serve alongside one another more intentionally, 2023 became a year of deep listening for Global Ministries, discerning the needs, concerns and joys of partners through strategic consultations. Listening cultivated learning among staff, missionaries and partner organizations and spurred new ways of connecting. This helped participants to more clearly see God’s presence in the places where their work intersected.

We wish to thank our steadfast partners, the individuals, churches and conferences that support mission work with prayer, curiosity and contributions. Read how Global Ministries and UMCOR share the love of God and serve God’s people with the support you provide.

Six Years, No Solution: A 500-Gallon Tank Carries Hope to West Virginia’s Forgotten

McDowell County is one of the poorest in the U.S., and the communities of Anawalt, Leckie and Gary are some of the hardest hit by the current six-year water crisis. All have Methodist churches that are part of the Welch Charge.

To ease the burden of residents who have to purchase many gallons of drinking water weekly, the Welch Charge contacted the West Virginia Conference Disaster Response Coordinator, Jim McCune, for help. McCune’s United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) connection put him in touch with Global Ministries’ Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) program.

A WASH grant allowed them to obtain a 500-gallon “water buffalo.” The conference disaster response team arranged to fill the portable water buffalo from the Welch water system, the county seat of McDowell, and transport it to Gary, where residents have been supplied with refillable containers. Residents of all three towns can come to get water, and volunteers will also continue deliveries for those who need it. Meanwhile, residents, including church members, continue to advocate state and local officials for a permanent solution to their aging, compromised water infrastructure. Full Story
