Brenda Vimbainashe Nguwa is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church serving as a Coordinator for Youth Ministry and Social Outreach Program with the Gereja Methodist Indonesia. She was commissioned in 2018.

Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, with approximately ten percent of the population being Christian, of which Methodists are a small part.

Brenda served as a United Methodist Global Mission Fellow at John Wesley Seminary in Jakarta from 2016–2017, opening the door to her placement as a missionary there. She teaches English and engages in ministry with young adults, an audience of great importance to the Indonesian church.

Brenda is from Mutare, Zimbabwe, where she is a member of the Hilltop United Methodist Church of the East Zimbabwe Annual Conference. She is a graduate in economics and sociology from Africa University, the church-related school in her hometown.

Love, humility, and compassion are the hallmarks of Brenda’s faith. Her Sunday school teacher explained to her when she was eight years old about God’s love and loving neighbors. Since then, Brenda has tried to live by the Great Commandment, caring about others as much as for herself. She understands love to mean sharing ideas and experiences as well as material things. “I believe in being humble and compassionate as Christ Jesus was,” she says.

Brenda took part in a range of mission projects and organizations in high school and college and came to have great admiration for the missionaries she encountered. “I felt connected to their work and wanted to be part of it.”

Her call to mission was influenced by Ephesians 2:10: “For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.”
