Creative community engagement

August 2020 | ATLANTA

Engaging with local communities is one of the core values of the Global Mission Fellows Program [hyperlink to GMF page]. Fellows serve alongside churches, community groups and individuals to address the priorities of people in the communities they serve. Due to the nature of COVID-19, many Global Mission Fellows have been finding unique ways to continue safely serving their local communities.

Below, hear from Warren Alfeche, a GMF from the Philippines serving in Northern Ireland, who is exploring new settings and outlets for ministry. Prior to COVID-19, Warren had pastoral duties at two churches as well as work at a hostel that provides shelter to homeless men in Derry/Londonderry. When Northern Ireland went into lockdown, Warren’s work had to shift to being almost entirely virtual. This presented challenges, but also created new opportunities for engaging with his community. Warren has since created video educational resources for local secondary schools and even learned how to bake bread for local congregations.

This is one of the educational resources Warren has created to share with local secondary schools in Derry/Londonderry on the topic of homelessness.

Warren has put his new baking skills to the test as he bakes breads and scones for members of his congregation.
