Training youth on the dangers of drug abuse and leadership skills to be deep rooted in Gods work.

Describe the need affecting community

According to the current Kenya National Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) Report, alcohol and drug abuse are the major social problem in Kenya. On the other hand the World Health Organization (WHO) says about 2.5 million people die annually due to illnesses and injuries associated with harmful alcohol and drug use. Here in Kenya NACADA estimates that half of all alcohol and drug abusers are between 10 and 19 years of age. Kenya is one country that is currently experiencing worst negative repercussions from alcohol and drug abuse. The President of Kenya last year declared the problem a national disaster, it is sad how generations are being wasted, young men have become almost impotent. Many have become blind, many families neglected. Increased domestic violence, and misuse of funds etc. Kenya is faced with a great threat from alcohol and substance abuse. Our children are very young age and youth are exposed to this danger hence the great need to create awareness. This has greatly affected the church because many youth in the churches are also involved in drug abuse practices. Therefore affecting the youth leadership. Not only in the present generation but also the future generation. The need to engage the youth in training programs in leadership skills is also vital to strengthen the youth leadership in our churches and also to make them become deep rooted in the work of God.

How will this Advance project help to address the need?

Greater awareness having been created, youth will have learned the risks of alcohol and drug abuse as early as possible and avoid entering into the problem. The project will train the youth and children through seminars, workshops, rallies, sport events. Which will equip the youth with the required information to make them avoid alcohol and drug abuse. Intensive campaigns will be done through Methodist churches gatherings and organized training programs targeting the youth. This project greatly helps in producing well trained youth leaders specifically to deal with youth ministry. Once trained they will assist in improving youth programs as well as developing new ones. Its eventually expected that among the trained youth leaders, will emerge trainers of trainers (TOT) who will ensure the continuity of the project by constantly training others to become youth leaders.

Describe the primary goal of the project

The project seeks to educate the youth on the dangers or risk of alcohol and drug abuse and train them on leadership skills, so as to have youth with deep rooted faith for the well being of the church in both the present and the future generations.

Describe the change you would like to see in the community as a result of this Advance project

Many children and youth with changed attitude towards alcohol and drug abuse which is necessary for good behavior. Many more youth engaged in productive activities in our community. Youth with low-risk habits and responsible attitude towards drugs and alcohol abuse. It is expected to have a vibrant church where young people are part of the church by being involved in all church activities. The youth will be the agents of positive change in the community and in the church by getting involved in leadership and in the mission work. There will be increased number of the youth in the church with little or no one leaving the church.
