Expanding a permanent endowment to produce a steady income to support salaries for Bolivian pastors.
Describe the need affecting community
The Pastors salaries of the Iglesia Evangelica Metodista en Bolivia (IEMB) are extremely low: $350/month. Pastors have to pay for their own transportation, expenses, and often for their own housing, and the expenses of the church (such as candles). Pastors are often asked to contribute to the medical or other needs local church members. There are only 45 full-time National Pastors who serve as National Officers, District Superintendents, and serve local churches. We need to double the number of pastors. There are 256 local churches or Avenzadas. Also El Alto, Bolivia is the fastest growing city in the Western Hemisphere, growing from 80,000 in 1987, to over 1 million today! Many of them are Methodists who moved in from the countryside and desperately want a Methodist church to attend in the big city. But we only have 4 pastors available to serve El Alto! We need pastors! Despite these difficulties, the pastors of the IEMB still do an incredible work of evangelism, and serving the Indigenous peoples of Bolivia. The IEMB is a church of the poor; with a median income of less than $2/day. Therefore, funding the pastors salaries from internal donations is not an option. Currently funding comes from private schools operated by the IEMB, and from the wildly varying donations which come through the “Pastoral Salaries” Advance #05912A.The goal for #05912A is $100,000/year but actually only raises $16,000 to$35,000/year. Raising funds consistently for on-going pastoral salaries is very difficult. Churches and Conferences lose interest and priorities change. There is a need for a constant, steady income to build as the base of support for the pastor’s salaries.
How will this Advance project help to address the need?
This project will help us grow the Bolivian Pastors’ Endowment Fund towards our $1 million goal which will allow the fund to support approximately 15% of the cost of all Bolivian pastors’ salaries.
Describe the primary goal of the project
Our goal is to double the Bolivian Pastors Endowment Fund to $800,000 dollars by the end of 2020. This would grow the income for pastors salaries to approximately $40,000/year or approximately 12% of the cost of salaries for the entire IEMB.
Describe the change you would like to see in the community as a result of this Advance project
Increased salaries and additional pastors for the IEMB.
